Indonesia’s Independence Day on 17 august is celebrated with parades all over country, and biggest one is held in Jakarta. There is a flag-raising ceremony held in Merdeka Square, and carnivals and cultural shows across the city. My favourite is JL Jaksa Street Fair, in August too, when the street turns into a colourful, vibrant stage, holding Betawi dance, theatre and music as well as modern performances.
