Where to buy fine crafted souvenirs in Jakarta?(give a different answer) .
You can buy Indonesian handmade souvenirs from the big, glossy department stores and malls in Jakarta but also from the specialized art markets or the chaotic flea market, it depends on time, budget and bargaining skills. If you don't have a lot of time to spend on gift shopping visit the top two floors of Pasaraya department store or the 3rd floor of Sarinah (a smaller version of Pasaraya). If you're more of an art conaisseur visit Pasar Seni (Taman Ria Ancol), the art market where you can find modern and traditional art items and watch indonesian craftmen at work. Jalan Surabaya Flea Market is a great place to rummage for antiques, collectibles and Javanese traditional items but be sure to bargain real hard. In all of these venues you can find traditional Javanese jewelry, batik and ikat items (table cloths, hankerchiefs, napkins, blankets), leather, wood and ceramic crafts (masks, puppets, traditional instruments, wind chime).
