Gunung Rinjani is one of the biggest inactive volcanos in Indonesia. Unlike Gunung Merapi near Yogyakarta which is closed for visitors you can hike up to the crater's rim. You should reserve at least 2 days to trek the mountain because climbing and descending in only one day is quite tiring and you don't get to enjoy anything because you're in a hurry. Inside the crater there's a large volcanic lake and hot springs. 3 day treks can be arranged with some of the travel agencies in Mataram like Perama (Jl Pejanggik 66, 0370 635 928).
