One of the most important historic sights in Surabaya is the Mesjid Ampel Mosque on Jl Ampel Suci. The mosque was built in 1421 by Sunan Ampel, a missionary sent to Indonesia to spread the Islam. Along the years, the mosque was expanded and another building was added but the original ornaments and pillars were kept. The mosque is still considered a pilgrimage site.
