Pasar Pabean shopping area in Surabaya

A good place to start a shopping trip in Surabaya is Pasar Pabean area, it's crowded but worth the haggle. There's also an open marketplace on Jl Panggung where most of the tourists come so it can quickly become a tourist trap. Still, my favourite shopping place (even if I don't really go shopping there but mostly to watch) remains the nearby night fish market where I can feast my eyes and stomach. I can rarely recognize any species of fish or seafood and the variety is overwhelming. The fish market opens at 8pm, just in time for an evening nibble or a late walk, if you can stand the smell.
